WHAT IS A DAY-IN-THE-LIFE FAMILY STORY?
“ARE WE GOING TO BE PHOTOGRAPHED FOR A WHOLE DAY?” asks the understandingly concerned mom who’s always secretly wanting amazing family photographs but she knows it to well. I will be torture, sweat, and tears going through yet another family session. “My husband and kids cringe and moan in complains every time I tell them I booked a family session.” she confesses.
Mom, I hear you! And to be honest… I don’t blame them!
Perfectly matched stiff outfits. “Don’t move or you’ll mess up your hair.” Already in a mad mood while rushing everybody through the door because you child didn’t want to wear those shoes or that bow…Oh, I can hear the joy! NOT! And don’t forget my ultimate favorite “say CHEEEEESE!” and then they all come with the most fake smile ever!!! Let’s add “you only have 20 minutes session” to this nightmare of approach. All in the hopes everyone cooperates and you get at least ONE good family photo for Christmas cards. Does this resonate? If it sound painful to you is because it is….
What if I tell you there is a way you can have the cake and eat it too? Let me tell you why you have to do a Day-In-The-Life family story and why I love them so much.
And no, it doesn’t have to be a whole day just taking photographs but I’ll guarantee everyone will remember this day and will have a fantastic experience. They will CROWN you QUEEN for choosing to do a Day in the Life session with me. I have converted many reluctant dads in over ten years doing these story sessions.
BECAUSE YOU ONLY HAVE 18 SEASONS WITH YOUR LITTLE ONES
The more I do these sessions the more I realize how magnificent and dramatically important is to document your families’ short years together.
THE RODRIGUEZ GIRLS’ LOVE
She loves to draw. You will see her scribbling in every little piece of paper she finds. She prefers quiet places to get lost in art. But if there is something she loves more than drawing is her little baby sister. Other kids will be annoyed, but she welcomes every inconvenient interruption with open loving arms, letting her little sister know there is nothing more important in the world to her.
Baby girl will not remember these tiny moments or this stage in their lives but photographs will anchor a genuine and present feeling of how life was back then.
Baby J is the joy of the family! And she will do anything big sis would tell her.
“BUT my life and children are in constant chaos. How could I possibly want this time to be documented?“
What you see as chaos is beautiful chaos…and that’s the way it should be. You are investing in creating amazingly caring human beings. We are so often immersed in the everyday routine that what we see is the work and not the worth. One day you will look back and the only tangible thing about these chaotic days are the precious photographs you printed.
Loving our beautiful chaos. Day in the Life Stories are NOT for everyone. These are documentary stories for families ridiculously in LOVE with their children and their everyday beautiful “controlled” chaos. These are stories for parents who admit parenting is hard and can drive them crazy sometimes but they also recognize their kids are growing too fast and still want to HOLD-ON to them a little longer.
Think of your Day in the Life session as an editorial shoot for a parenting magazine and you are the perfect family for the article. Maybe I read too many parenting magazines when my littles were little but that’s how I approach these sessions. Moms love when they see their family story because their photographs feels so natural, effortless, but they’re also magazine style.
Let’s Keep It Real But Stylish…and FUN!
Celebrate HER! She LOVES space and the universe and looking through the telescope is one of her favorite things to do. She was excitedly telling me all about it. Hopefully, this interest stays with her for a lifetime but isn’t it wonderful to celebrate who she is and her interests at this age?
Family Time
What is that activity that brings you together? I always ask this question when preparing for a Day in the Life Story session. The Rodriguez family’s answer? JENGA. Because no matter how tall they built that tower, it will always be demolished by baby’s feet or hands and laughter will inevitable followed. These are treasured moments of who that are right now. What brings your family together?
THE ADDED CONFIDENCE
And then, she felt so confident in her blue dress we needed to do some model portraits because she felt so pretty. A relaxed photography experience brings out the best in all of us.
And like her big sister, baby sis wanted to do some modeling too! How adorable!
“I LOVE THEM BUT I’D LOVE TO SEND CHRISTMAS CARDS THIS YEAR. CAN WE DO FORMALS?”
Yes! With all the happy energy and celebrations of the day as a family I can almost guarantee you EVERYONE, including DAD, will be more than happy to comply. You can have the PERFECT portrait at the end of the day for family dynamic “formals”.
